THE FORTRESS OF MORNAS
The origins of the Fortress of Mornas are vague as there no records in which we can find a specific date (or even area) of construction.
It is known, however, that the site upon which the fortress was built, had been occupied since Roman times.
It is probable that, at the height of the Middle Ages, the site was made of a wooden construction with a tower surrounded by a fence. Its function was to protect the village of Mornas.
By the 10th century, Mornas was owned by the Earl of Toulouse. At that time, the only inhabitants of the fortress were a small garrison of soldiers who maintained the Earl’s authority throughout the region. During the 10th century, the Earl of Toulouse, the Archbishop of Arles and the King of France all claimed possession of Mornas and their dispute lasted until the 13th century.
